My thoughts exactly! Since the plane already has its tail painted to PAL livery, which is also done by other oneworld liveried planes. Interesting..
One issue is that PR isn't officially joining Oneworld until 2027, so it might be premature to paint the plane in a Oneworld livery. Maybe it will have a different special livery, or maybe the timing was genuinely a coincidence.

Don't forget, they recently tapped the former chairman of Malaysia Airlines as one of their board members

So what happens now with NH then since they have a stake in the airline and in codeshare with them

I don’t really think it will do anything. It will remain as is. CA’s share in CX is roughly 30% and yet CX is in OW and CA is in Star. CX has quite a number of codeshare with non-OW members like LH CA NZ et al

PR is set to join Oneworld by 2027 but you still have those bare ceos and bare A333s. A jurassic B777 cabin with barely anything working.

https://aviationweek.com/air-transport/airlines-lessors/pal-ceo-talks-outlook-joining-oneworld

The oneworld global alliance is expanding its presence in Asia with Philippine Airlines (PAL) planning to join next year.

“I hope to integrate Philippine Airlines into oneworld sometime in 2027 so we can officially have them as part of our offering to customers,” oneworld CEO Olé Orvér told ATW during a media briefing at the IATA AGM in Rio de Janeiro. PAL serves 29 destinations within the Philippines plus 40 international cities.

“This is indeed a proud day for our alliance. [PAL] beautifully complements our network in South-east Asia,” American Airlines CEO and oneworld chair Robert Isom said.

Oneworld currently has 15 airline members, including Asian carriers Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and SriLankan. Orvér believes PAL gives the alliance a hub in a part of the world where it was not as strong as in other places and provides a new brand offering. “It is a perfect fit for us,” he said.

For the Manila hub, which is relatively constrained, “we are concentrating more on upgrading the size of our aircraft and flying more intercontinental flights,” PAL CEO Richard Nuttall said. “In terms of the growth, we estimate that will be around 4% to 5% as we go forward.”

PAL Holdings president Lucio Tan III added, “This is a transformation moment for Philippine Airlines, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year.”

Separately, Nuttall talked about PAL’s market status and outlook. He said high fuel prices and geopolitical events had affected air travel demand, so PAL has made some slight route adjustments and reduced capacity by about 15%. “This is not structural; it is temporary,” he said. “Unfortunately, you have to keep fares a little bit higher, otherwise you lose money on every flight you fly. Keeping the fares up is covering half the fuel costs, which varies by route.”

He also said the airline had deferred about $100 million in planned capital expenditure, but this would not be a long-term deferral.

“The airline is in a good space; we have had four or five good years. We have access to funding if needed, but we not going to take it unless we need it,” he said. Manila authorities have also granted the airline a waiver for 20 slots in Manila for this summer.

In terms of fleet, the Airbus A350-1000 has become the lead aircraft in PAL’s long-haul network, New -1000s are arriving “pretty much on time,” with five more expected to arrive this year.

On the narrowbody side, “The 13 A321neos we have on order are sliding a little bit, but we don’t mind that too much at the moment. That allows the engine to mature a little bit,” Nuttall said.

Of the eight A321neos already in the fleet, two are grounded related to Pratt & Whitney GTF engine issues, but one of those is expected to return to service shortly.

In terms of network, PAL will return to Doha on July 1 after a suspension because of the war in Iran. “We haven’t made a decision on Dubai yet. The Middle East is around 7% of the carrier’s total capacity. It affects us, but it is not massive. It’s manageable, but not ideal. The real negative thing is the high fuel price,” Nuttall said

Since Nutall mentioned five A35K arriving this year

It looks like PAL wants to fast track the deliveries to put out old cabin 77Ws on long haul flights. This aligns with the plan of PAL to use those instead on mid haul market so the ones used for long haul are all new cabins for a better experience again since some pax are from other oneworld member flight.

The A321ceo cabin refurb should be done by Q1 2027 so all oneworld connecting passengers can experience better cabin.

The OFW express A330 can be deployed instead on regional routes under 2hrs specially the flights with a lot of demand but dont need flashy cabins

A Japanese journalist asked about the ANA stake, and Tan said he would reply by e-mail as it is a "sensitive" topic. Interesting.

ANA shares had been further diluted after capital increase from the Tan’s during pandemic but correct me if I’m wrong, ANA still holds 1 seat on the board.

I’m curious which airline(s) invited PR to OW. My guess is AA.

Re: PAL

From someone:
SkyTeam probably now has the weakest connection from Southeast Asia to the US and Canada. Afaik only Vietnam is flying direct and it's just to SFO and there's none for Canada. This is the strength of PAL which gives Oneworld advantage for that lucrative North America connection. This should also boost NAIA as a potential hub if they can improve for other alliances that fly direct to US with United and likely Delta next year, and Air Canada to Canada. If NAIA will improve and NMIA is up and running, they can take away some traffic from SQ for a better value. This should also be good for those people south of equator who doesn't want to travel further up north just to reach NA.

Wasn't one issue for PR how CX and JL are already strong in North America, so for the longest time, it was said that Oneworld's access to North America was already well-served and PAL wasn't needed? And I thought the more important market for Southeast Asia was actually Europe and not NA, considering all the SEA carriers that fly to Europe.

I read a forum post on A.net suggesting that AA could be launching LAX-MNL. If true, it was apparently a coincidence and was planned even before the PR-Oneworld announcement, though who knows if it was a behind-the-scenes thing. If it's true, it would be surprising since AA is the weakest of the US3 in Asia, and they don't even serve more obvious routes like LAX-HKG at the moment.

Here is the reuters article

Philippine Airlines will order new planes, perhaps in the next couple of months, the company's president Richard Nuttall said on Saturday.

“We will be ordering new planes. If you wait a couple of months, you will probably find out,” Nutall said.

Re: PAL

Solblanc

It’s not just what Richard said, it’s also where he said it. Perhaps Embraer has been able to make a pitch while Richard was there? But that’s just wishful thinking.

With the timing, and with oil prices, this makes me think that they’re thinking long-term with this order. In the short-term, they don’t exactly need that much extra capacity. So perhaps that means they’re ready to get in line for 787s.

One of the other articles mentioned how Richard is confident that they can continue to be disciplined, and that they have funding for bad times which they hope they don’t tap into. Early capex with near-term deliveries (A330neo) is going to cost them more in the short term, while placing a few 787 orders now will also cost money, but they have plenty of time to figure out the financing as deliveries are still years away.

Re: PAL

Embraer order is practical so they can now operate low demand flights specially during Q3 every year where the demand is low specially on some domestic flights.

And the most important thing, to operate flights from Manila that is utilizing the Q400 since the turboprop ban is effective they can also evade it now using E190s
