Re: PAL

Old articles about PAL joining an alliance

Majority of this are made on 2019, pre-pandemic times therefore we can analyze again after many years after everything happened to PAL and other carriers in Asia.

Philippine Airlines is in talks to join an airline alliance, President and Chief Operating Officer Jaime Bautista has disclosed.

Speaking to the Aviation Analyst blog, Bautista said the accession process, which has already started, would last up to two years. He did not disclose which of Star Alliance, Oneworld, or Skyteam the carrier would be joining.

"The alliance membership will help give Philippine Airlines access to more interior points in Europe and North America, as well as the continents of Africa and South America where we can tap new sources of traffic,” he said

PAL Vice President of Sales Ryan Uy was asked about alliances at a conference in Cebu this week. He proceeded to give a rather detailed answer: Star Alliance is big, but you see a lot of overlaps in the region. While oneworld tends to work with the strong carriers in each geographic regions. SkyTeam seems to have the least overlap, as they have limited members.

It is true that oneworld tends to work with stronger carriers in the region, but Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon alone (or even JAL) are not enough to block PAL. The problem is nearby Malaysia Airlines, which serves many of the same destinations via its hub in Kuala Lumpur.

Yeah. Defying again EU imposed sanctions against flying Russian airspace as you can clearly see. In fact, we are now importing Russian gas causing aviation fuel to simmer quite a bit.

Quantas PR partnership.

You can now use Quantas points to redeem PAL flights.

Apparently Cebu Pacific is having some money issues at the moment? I imagine it's due to the fuel costs, and also why they had to temporarily suspend or reduce some routes.

Yes.

-400 million pesos net loss for 1Q. Its huge. All because of its forward booking strategy, the same cost structure that brought Spirit down. Good for 5J they have reserves to burn while Spirit doesn't.

"a large portion of tickets had already been sold months earlier at lower assumed fuel costs," says Michael Szucs.

That sums it up. But of course we predicted it as early as March it would happen.

Do you have a Ch-aviation subscription, or is there an alternate source? The Ch-aviation link is paywalled but I found the Inquirer talking about it.

Of course there are plenty of alternative sources

This one for example

Cebu Pacific looks beyond short-term losses

Cebu Pacific swung to a net loss of ₱400 million ($6.5 million) in the first three months of 2026 as it took on a ₱1.8 billion foreign exchange loss. This was despite a 10% increase in operating revenue – on the back of a 6% increase in traffic – to ₱33.3 billion.
Its more reliable than what you posted. And the author sees this forum regularly

Yet another Oneworld link given that Malaysia Airlines is a OW member. This can't be a coincidence, can it?

Will they still be allowed to operate to privatized airports, or no because those are still under the supervision of government airport authorities?

PAL’s 4th A35K, F-WZHC msn 592, successfully conducted its maiden flight at Toulouse. It flew while still being in its primer paint.

Are we expecting a retro livery of some sort, or just delays in the paintshop? Hehe
